These are really great workshops if you've never sewn anything before but really want to get started. Each session will concentrate on a few bite sized areas with basic stitches and information and practical work on hand and machine sewing. There will be a couple of slightly more advanced things introduced in the basics sessions to give you an idea of further sewing techniques. Each session will review what the previous one did and progress to build a library for you to have access to. Lots of great projects to try out from the very first session. We are encouraging the use of old fabrics to minimise waste and each session will have a suggested "bring along" together with an end of session information "takeaway". There will be examples for you to see and each step will be demonstrated.
Content
Hand stitching: tacking, running, back stitch, blind hem stitch+(Buttonhole/blanket stitch).
Using a sewing machine: safety, setting up, learning machine parts, threading, machine tension, inserting bobbin and needles, changing feet.
We will practise using grid lines, circles and corners.
We will make our first seam and if time allows our first item! (At the end of the session you will have the knowledge to make a simple drawstring bag.)
*The " bring along*:
any clean old fabrics/garments or sheets/pillowcases that you have to use for practising on. ( we will be cutting them up so only bring old unusable items. We will supply threads and basic tools including sewing machines ( you are welcome to bring your own sewing kit and or machine if you have one!) It's really good to keep a wee sample book of the stitches that you sew for your own reference.
